VAST-xxt TL1 TL3 TL4

The VAST-xxt Scanning Sensor comes in three versions: TL3 is by far the most common and is suited for most CMM applications. TL1 springs are less stiff so can be better for measuring soft parts like plastic (a more gentle probing force). TL4 is quite rare but has a stiff spring inside which lends itself to longer styli possibilities. Each has its ow...

VAST versus VAST-xxt

The VAST- xt is an active scanning sensor while the VAST-xxt is considered passive. The active sensors have force generators inside which act like drives.  The passive sensors rely on springs inside to create the measuring force.  Active scanning is famous and exclusive to ZEISS.  It allows for faster scanning speeds while maintaining accuracy and a...

Rotary Joints/ Conical/Cone connection

The “Connection Type” of styli and extensions can be threaded, conical or cone.  Conical and Cone are one in the same, they use set screws to hold the styli or adapter in place at a set angle. The benefit of this connection type over the standard threaded connection is the flexibility to adjust the angle of any adapter or star styli. With the multip...

Reference Sphere Calibration

Zeiss does not recommend nor recalibrates reference spheres. The brief reasoning being that any change to the initial recorded size of the reference sphere is actually detrimental to the accuracy of the CMM. If the reference sphere has been damaged in some way, Zeiss does recommend reaching out to the Service Technical Support team at cic.metrology....

Sensors: RDS

RDS…. articulating probe holder: The ZEISS RDS articulating probe holder is particularly well-suited for measuring complex parts, where features require many styli with different spatial directions. It reaches up to 20,736 positions in 2.5-degree increments – thus providing access to every part feature. This is made possible by the horizontally and ...

Sensors: Dot Scan

Dot Scan: ZEISS DotScan is an outstanding option for capturing freeform surfaces and even for minute structures. Chromatic white light sensors – and hence also the ZEISS DotScan – are the method of choice, especially when styli or camera sensors reach their limits on sensitive, soft, reflective or low-contrast surfaces.     ...

Reference Sphere - technical info

Reference Sphere… some facts It is very important that the correct reference sphere is used, and that its latest calibrated size is entered into Calypso.  It is also essential that the stylus tip and calibration artifacts are scrupulously clean. Multi-Sensor Check - Simple Definition

Multi-Sensor Check The Multi-Sensor check is a nice way to check machine accuracy "interim", meaning between annual calibrations.  Many people would measure the "check" artifact once per month to have peace of mind in the machine accuracy.                 It cannot be used to perform an ISO 10360 calibration though. ISO procedures call for a 12 mont...

ZEISS Styli - Anatomy

A stylus normally consists of three components:  Adapter, shaft and stylus tip The adapter The adapter is the connection between the connection thread and the shaft. Reach CFX Extensions

Extensions are three types: CFX 1,3,5. The overall influence of the extension on the measuring uncertainty is mainly determined by three factors: weight, thermal expansion and static stiffness. CFX Extension  types are equal in weight and thermal expansion.  All perform better than aluminum and titanium.  A CFX 1 extension will have the most deflect...

Diamond vs. diamond-coated styli

Since a probe starts to wear very quickly, solid diamond is more durable with respect to the application.  The solid diamond stylus should also be used to carry out discrete-point probing with high point loading. The diamond-coated stylus is especially suitable for applications with components made of soft materials such as aluminum, titanium, or co...
