CBS stands for Car Body Solutions:
-
We (ZEISS) don’t sell the robots, just the sensors, controllers, software and services.
-
The CBS Sales team is Gerrit deGlee, KR Srinivas, and Kevin Santilli. TJ Crouch does some of it too.

The business has been expanding extremely rapidly over the past few years and will continue.
AI Max (INDI Software) – This solution is the traditional method which is repeatable but not accurate (inherent trait of robots). The customer will correlate measurements about every 6 months to measurements on a CMM or GOM Scanbox. Those measurements are considered “absolute” so the Robot/AI Max data is then offset based on the difference in measurement results. These bi-annual correlation studies typically involve 10 parts which can be full car bodies! This takes a lot of time and effort so customers have always desired correlation-free solutions for this in-line process control. Due to temperature influences on the robot geometry, the system will compensate for temperature frequently by measuring some opaque reference spheres.
AI Max Cloud (INDI Software) – The sensor is a newer, better technology than the AI Max. It can be sold as traditional correlation dependent. It can also involved a “cage” around the sensor which in conjunction with 2 “eyes in the sky” sensors tracks there the robot head is during measurement. Although this can be line of sight dependent and a bit complex, it is correlation free! The correlation free solution can have an ISO 10360-8 calibration once per year. We send in a large ball bar and two technicians with a lead time of a few months. Costs around $12,000 per “space” (could be 1 or more robots for the same price).
AI Max Trace Laser (INDI Software) – Looks like rabbit ears. Specifically measures localized Flush and Gap (ex: gap between door and fender).
AI Max Trace UV (INDI Software) – Looks like rabbit ears. Specifically measures localized flush and gap or headlight/taillight to car body.
ABIS (ABIS Teach In Software) – Looks for surface defects, not geometric measurements. System is taught by programmer what is a good or bad part then it consistently makes that determination for parts presented to the system (sort of like Artificial Intelligence). Common in press shops and also body in white. Currently ABIS 2, while ABIS 3 is on the way. There is a customer training class coming soon in Wixom.
“Fit and Finish” – name we came up with when offering customer both the AI Max Trace and also an ABIS system.
We (AMS) will offer training @ ZEISS or on-site, support plans (like SMA), & ISO 10360-8 on certain systems.
